It is fully equipped with the necessary infrastructures and constantly under monitored all year long."São Brás" Fortress This polygonal fortress follows the design of Italian Tomaso Benedetti; it has four bastions at the corners, prepared to receive firearms and low but very thick walls. Inside, there is a square and around it a set of buildings of diverse epochs and configurations.Over the centuries it has been altered with new additions and transformations. Its function consisted of guaranteeing national sovereignty, protecting the city of Ponta Delgada and defending commercial fleets from the attacks of English, French and Algerian pirates and privateers. At present, it houses the Command of the Military Zone of the Azores, as well as the Military Museum of the Azores."José do Canto" Botanical Garden José do Canto (1820-1898) was a cultured wealthy man and a nature lover. Well versed in the secrets of botany, he established contacts with botanical gardens and nurseries from around the world, from whose he bought, sold or exchanged plants.Since the mid-19th Century he turned his garden, located in Santana, Ponta Delgada, into an outstanding space for the acclimation of thousands of species, many of them later introduced into his landscaped woods at Furnas and Lagoa do Congro. Edmond Goeze (1838-1929), a german botanist, on behalf of the Botanical Garden of Coimbra University, conducted in 1866 a mission in São Miguel. Impressed with the “lovely gardens that exist in Ponta Delgada”, he wrote that “the garden of Mr. José do Canto is unquestionably the richest of all, probably having over 3,000 species. None of the private gardens that we had a chance to visit in Europe can compare. (...)"
